Shipping Firm Maersk Spends £1bn on ‘Carbon Neutral’ Container Ships

Maersk, the world’s largest shipping firm, announced a purchase of eight new shipping vessels this August, worth $1.4 billion. It marks the largest investment in carbon neutral shipping so far. These vessels can be fueled by green methanol in addition to traditional bunker fuel. It is expected to save 1 million tonnes of supply chain carbon emissions per year.

They also plan to produce 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen methanol to meet their own demand.

As more than half of Maersk’s 200 largest clients have now set sustainability targets, this move is a powerful signal of shifting responsibility through the supply chain.
